Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1988. Over 25 years now!
What is your primary product or service?
Golden Harvesters, Inc. provides vegetables, fruit, bread, dairy, and various other food items to low-income residents in the Portland area. Anyone in need can join. Income verification is not required.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
A small group of concerned citizens recognized that the elderly, disabled, "working poor," and other low-income community members had a growing need for affordable food. The original members of Golden Harvesters, Inc. would go out into the fields and glean fruits and vegetables left over after the harvest. Today, Golden Harvesters, Inc. has evolved and now offers a wide range of groceries, thanks to the Oregon Food Bank and recurring donations from local businesses.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Golden Harvesters, Inc. is 100% volunteer-operated, and run like a cooperative. Each month, members pay $20 and volunteer for 2 hours. In return, they may take home food twice a week.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Just one. In October, 2013, we moved from our old location to a larger facility that better suits our needs.
